Victor Xray interview @ Cyclic Defrost

Couple of minor factual errors ... I came to Sydney in 81 but the Gunnery started about 84 or 85. Otherwise an excellent interview I think.
Victor Xray - The Vengeance Of Mister Whiskers (mp3)
Victor Xray 320 MP3
Another Sunday night and another dub for y'all. This one started out a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't get it anywhere near right until this afternoon. In many ways it's a return to the old-school dub of Nerve Agent In Dub - it's got those melodies and basslines. It is at the standard dubstep tempo (140). Maybe next week I'll stepp it up and make it a little more modern. In the meantime, enjoy! I do quite like this mix.
UPDATE: new version, meatier snares, mid frequencies rolled off the bass, slight changes in the arrangement. Same filename as before.

Victor X-Ray: The Dead Walk/Dark Arts of Dub
Played at a different speed, Victor Xray's productions would probably be mistaken for a product of the UK's dubstep scene - what with their lugubrious atmospherics, dub bass and trenchantly clattering electronic beats. Instead, this EP is more like deeply uneasy listening: Australian Scot McPhee wisely rejects the easy languidness and cod-spirituality of most homegrown takes on electronic dub, instead opting for a compulsive hyper-vigilance that belies the otherwise torpid tempo. McPhee's sonic clarity can be pretty compelling at times: check the zither-like skittering beats and orchestral hits on highlight Bellweather Beaten, or the mindboggling interplay of chimes on the grim skank of Dub Forever International. But the home-listening angle maybe undercuts the music's value somewhat: it's hard to know what how to respond to Xray's almost militaristic spareness and precision if you can't move your body to it.
Retarded Mouse - Slow Action Acid (mp3)
Retarded Mouse 320kbps MP3
A new Retarded Mouse track for Sunday. This one's a slow (116bpm) acid track similar in tones to the first Retarded Mouse track Everybody Take Drugs. I'm regaining my appreciation for this type of music again, and finding it a lot more interesting to produce and funkier when it's just that little slower than the standard acid tempos. This one's got no vocal (at this point), and the sounds are decidedly much more old school. Listen to it on a big system for the big sub-bass!
