The Yard, 4ZZZ-fm
Radio airplay
Big Up to Basmati from The Yard, 4ZZZ FM's Dub Reggae show (6pm Sunday evenings on 4ZZZ 102.1FM in Brisbane) for playing a couple of tracks of mine; namely Desmond Tiny's Dub & Love Dub So.
I went on Saturday night to The Yard's monthly roots, dub & dancehall event, AKA the Rhythm Collision Sound System, which is currently held upstairs at the Pavilion Hotel in West End. This is a pretty nice venue, comfy seating area and bar tables and nice open area for dancing with a good clean sound system that's not overdriven and sounds sweet. If you like dub reggae & dancehall (and if not why are you at this blog anyway?!) and can make it along I reccommend that you subscribe to their mailing list and mosey along to their next event.

Stanislaw Lem
Polish science fiction writer and author of "Solaris"
I was very excited last night when Lisa brought home a pair of Stanislaw Lem books - the first a collection of short stories called "Mortal Stories", many humourously similiar in vein to those found another of his short story compilationm, "The Cyberiad", and a full length novel from 1968, "His Masters Voice".
His short stories, and indeed often his novels, are infused with a macabre humour and playful fantasy. The "Mortal Stories" appears to consist of the eleven short stories from Lem's "Fables For Robots", plus some additional ones which are in similar territory.
His translator, Michael Kandel writes;
Of all the Lems - the writer of traditional science fiction, the philosopher, the political satirist, the visionary, the moralist, and so on, - the Lem I personally liked the best, and still do, was the storytelling humourist: the zany Baron Munchausen Lem.
For those who don't know, Lem, a Polish SF writer born in Lvov, is the writer of the book "Solaris" on which the Andrei Tarkovsky film is based (although a complete rewrite of its tone and intent). In turn the novel and Tarkovsky's film formed the basis of the Stephen Soderburg film of the same name starring George Clooney.
Lem also wrote an excellent novel "The Futurological Congress", an interesting little tale which explores the nature of consciousness and reality several years before P.K.Dick started writing in that same vein. I'm very excited by the prospect of reading His Master's Voice - written from the perspective of a posthumously published diary. I've started first though with the short stories, to "warm up" as it were as it's been a few years since I've read any new (to me) Lem works.
I recommend anyone with any love of SF to read Lem's books. Recommended are Solaris, The Futurological Congress, and The Cyberiad.
I leave you with a quote from the master himself, taken from his autobiographical essay "The High Castle";
I used to be a philanthropist to old spark plugs, I would buy parts of incomprehensible gadgets, I would turn some crank or other to give it pleasure, then put it away again with solicitude. ... To this day I have a special feeling for all sorts of broken bells, alarm clocks, old coils, telephone speakers.
I rate Stanislaw Lem along with J.G.Ballard, and P.K.Dick as the leading triumviruate of so-called "literary" SF writing.

Reschs Dinner Ale - the king of all dinner ales, perfect accompaniment to the veggie burgers at Burgerman in Kings Cross.
Tennants - much consumed last weekend in Inverness, drunk more for the funky cans Scottish origin than the taste really.
Guinness - on occasion, in particular when eating oysters at the Cow in Notting Hill.
Tiger - awesome with the veggie Laksa at Happy Chef in the Sussex Street Food Court.
Crown Lager - perfect for consumption at any quality rural wedding, racing carnival or in the backseat of a Holden Statesman.
And yourself?

Dub Is I Guiding Star Remix (mp3)
Victor X-Ray Audio System
A brand new remix I did on the weekend of "Dub Is I Guiding Star". It has an all new riddum as I was never very happy with the old one. There is a new bass sound and completely redone drums, which end up giving it a tougher yet sparser feel. As before, and hence the title, the bassline is from a very famous reggae song "You Are My Guiding Star", performed in various versions by artists like Horace Andy, The Aggrovators, and Tapper Zukie. Instruments: Ableton Live v3.

Dub Hard International (mp3)
Victor X-Ray Audio System
A dancehall, harder, version of Melodarimbic Internationale, without the melodion and highlighting just the synth vibes solo. Instruments: Ableton Live, Clavia Nord Modular.

Little bands, 1981 - 1984
Sydney post punk nostalgia
Inspired by what I termed "baby boomer congratulatory back slapping" on Larvartus Prodeo regarding "music’s greatest year ever" (1971 according to Chris Sheil), and up to my usual arguing for the sake of arguing, ladies and gentlemen, I give you the alternative greatest year ever - 1981.
World’s greatest collection of “little bands” — right here, from Sydney, courtesy of Phil Turnbull; Memoirs from various of the aforementioned Sydney bands or more generally Phil’s site No Night Sweats and you can also try Inner City Sound and Australian Post Punk 1976 - 1981.
Geez it was a marvel to be a teenager in 1981 - or a twenty-something in 1984
I would offer a proper discography of 1981, but, in typical generation X slacker style, I could not be arsed. If you push me further I’ll just snarl at the camera, then if you persist I’ll claim that I’m only here for the drugs and the birds after the show, and then finally, declare my total and unrelenting boredom with the entire topic at hand in a very studied and offhand manner.
Fervent Software Studio To Go
Sound on Sound review of bootable Linux audio/midi software suite.
A review of a bootable linux and audio/music combination in Sound on Sound; Fervent Software Studio To Go
summary: A lot of software for under £50, and far more complete than any proprietary bundle. If you're interested in using Linux for music but fear the amount of new skills required, this could be the product for you.
Love Dub So (mp3)
Victor X-Ray Audio System
This track is titled "Love Dub So". The bassline is based on Jacob Miller / Augustus Pablo's "Baby I love you so". Instruments: Nord Modular, Ableton Live v3. A nice spacey melodic dub.
